Young Cyclists Speak

Young cyclists Yahvi (age 11) and Mihika Mohite (age 8) spoke before Houston City Council on September 11, in support of the proposed Austin Street Bikeway in their neighborhood. Miss Mihika commented that fewer students bike to school now than before, and offered statistics. According to Next City article, the percentage of students walking or biking to school has decreased dramatically over time, from 42 percent in 1969 to only 10 percent in 2017. These young ladies’ civic engagement is facilitated by their parents, Amar and Ujari Mohite, who are both public servants with Harris County (Precinct One) and METRO, respectively. Bicycling offers alternative transportation and healthy fitness opportunities for people of all ages.
